The story behind “Brother” begins with a frightening diagnosis. One of Paul Stone’s closest friends was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma, a moment that moved the Yorkshire songwriter to create a song about support, friendship and the power of human connection.
Rather than writing from a place of darkness, Stone shaped “Brother” as a hopeful and compassionate piece of music. His friend has since made a remarkable recovery, and the song now stands as a celebration of resilience as much as a response to fear.
The track was recorded with The Basement Collective, a group of six musicians whose approach is based on emotional honesty and live musicianship. Their recordings aim to capture real performances and genuine feeling, reflecting Stone’s desire to make music that will still hold meaning years from now.
Stone’s own life has given him a wide emotional palette to draw from. A father of four, he has balanced music with business, family life and community commitments. After studying at Leeds College of Music, he stepped away from pursuing music full-time for almost a decade, but continued to build the foundations for his future creative work.
“Brother” is therefore not only a song about one friendship, but also a reflection of Stone’s wider artistic values. It is sincere, grounded and built on the belief that music can help people feel less alone.
