Teasing your lead single will always be an intrepid task, it’s your musical ‘first impression’, one of the boldest statements an artist can make; it’s very much a leap of faith. Fortunately, rising hip-hop icon Affy La God lands on both feat with the arrival of ‘We Found It’ – the lead track from much anticipated debut EP ‘Affy La God: Volume 1’.
Pertaining to the rapper’s well established M.O of neon-drenched hip-hop, ‘We Found It”s assault of hi-hat mayhem and intricate vocal deliveries are a mere backdrop to the 80s horror-flick influence that drives the track’s spirit.
La God fulfills this with a haunting atmosphere of reverb, chilling synth notes and an ominous spoken-word passage that may as well be delivered by The Grim Reaper themselves – rather befitting for tackling facets of La God’s life including previous relationships, drug addiction, and mental illness.
All of this is done with the experience and valor of an artist decades beyond his experience, perhaps due to La God’s (real name Africa Nile) history of West End performance’s as Young Simba in The Lion King and touring alongside Alexandra Burke across The Royal Albert Theatre, AO Arena Manchester, and 3 Arena Dublin.
‘We Found It’ truly achieves its purpose as a lead single. Not only does it further cement La God as a driving force for some of the UK’s most exciting hip-hop artists but effortlessly builds a well-deserved hype for his debut EP. All eyes fall to La God to upkeep this high level of play for the next release but it’s clear that the only way is up from here.
