Pete Cater will release his new EP, West Side Story, on May 1st, 2026, marking a new chapter for the acclaimed British jazz drummer. The project is paired with two live appearances this May as part of The Great Drum Show, adding a performance dimension to the release.
The EP stands out not only for its musicianship but also for the circumstances of its recording. Rather than being made in a traditional studio, West Side Story was recorded in a school hall during the summer break. Despite that unusual location, the result is a rich and refined sound, showcasing Cater at what is described as a creative peak and highlighting the contribution of a strong supporting ensemble.
Cater’s standing in jazz has been established over many years. He has been recognised internationally, including a ranking as the 5th Best Jazz Drummer in the World by Rhythm Magazine readers. His awards also include Best Big Band at the British Jazz Awards and Best Drummer at the Radio 2 National Big Band Contest, confirming the esteem in which he is held across the scene.
Born in Staffordshire in 1963, Cater grew up surrounded by jazz, taking inspiration from his father. He was already playing live in his teens and later relocated to London at 29, a move that proved significant in the development of his career. Today, from his base in West Sussex, he continues to work not just as a performer but also as a label owner supporting independent musicians and releases.
Cater’s live dates will take place at Pizza Express, Soho, on May 17th and at the Concorde Club, Eastleigh, on May 20th. Alongside his music, he is also known for his advocacy of fitness and wellbeing and for speaking openly about the realities facing independent artists. With West Side Story, he brings those qualities together in a release that reflects both experience and forward momentum.
