The electronic rock revolution continues with the latest web-series X-RL7 debuting on YouTube. Combining the best of both cyberpunk culture and classic rock style, the series follows the adventures of the fictitious band X-RL7 as they try to make it in the music industry.
With its unique retro-gaming inspired animation and real-world musician guest stars, it is sure to be a hit with fans of all ages. Featuring the likes of Andy Cizek (Monuments), Daniel Graves (Aesthetic Perfection), Blue Stahli, Craig Owens (Chiodos/DRUGS), and Jimmy Urine [Mindless Self Indulgence] X-RL7 has the star power to back up its innovative aesthetic. Those fans that are interested in the show’s visuals are in for a treat – each episode is 5-10 minutes long and includes a series of music videos embedded within it.
As far as sound is concerned, X-RL7 draws from a wide array of electronic, rock, and metal influences. Think Celldweller, Linkin Park, and Nine Inch Nails. With over 14,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and favourable reviews from outlets like Metal Injection, Regen Mag, and the hereWH Times, it’s clear that the show’s music has garnered its own following. The series has a lot to say about the current music industry and wider society, exploring themes such as social media and censorship. It is also boundary-pushing in its approach to art – the series is the brainchild of musician and animator Mike Evans. Who, after beginning his work on the project late in 2018, finally revealed X-RL7 to the world in July 2020.
“The people I’ve been able to work with have been incredible,” said Evans. “It’s been humbling to see such an engaged online community forming around the show and the music.”
